Be the Best Game in Town!
Ginger, Malcolm, & McArthur
Different owners, different breeders, ages 7 mos to 1yr When there are children involved, management is always a part of the program. School is always in session! Downtime makes for good times! Tell your dog when he's right!
These 3 Bernese Mt Dogs are working on a weekend in a crowded park with baseball games, tennis, basketball and kids all around them. But their focus is keen because they've learned that working with us is much more gratifying than paying attention to all the distractions. You love your child and you love your dog. So everyone should get along famously, right?
But even with a perfect dog and a perfect child, sometimes your child doesn't appreciate being knocked down by a huge wagging tail...or your dog has been backed into a corner by an overenthusiastic child just one too many times.
It's up to you as adults to monitor the situation, and keep a close eye on all their interactions. This is not an optional tip! Short, daily practice sessions with your dog are much more effective than sporadic lengthy ones. Your dog will look forward to working with you if you incorporate these sessions into your often hectic life. They can be as short as 3-5 minutes. But if you keep them upbeat, fun, and rewarding, you'll often find your dog pushing you to work harder! Taking time out to enjoy time with your dog helps build the parthnership that results in a companion that wants to work with you when called upon. We spend a lot of time being frustrated with our dogs when they don't perform exactly as we expect. The word "no" is sometimes the most used word in our canine vocabulary.
Our dogs do so much that is right, but we often fail to let them know that we're pleased. Work to perfect a reinforcing "g-o-o-d". Use it consistently and watch your timing. It goes a long way toward building that partnership & having your dog look to you for guidance.
